Your doctor is lying to you

     Hey,

Your doctor is lying to you, or if you see the same doctor as me, then my doctor is lying to you.  See, it's like this:  the years of piano, vocals, and coming up with clever comebacks when folks shout out 'freebird' have taken their toll on ole ryan.  I said to myself, "self - you gotta take better care, be healthier".  Not wanting to shock the system, I'm taking this step by step.  'Bout 9 months ago I gave up fast food.  Not.  Easy.  Took 4 weeks for the itchin' and cravins to stop.  Heather tells me I still sometimes mumble 'McRib... McRib...  extra sauce" in my sleep.  Weird that she can hear that all the way from the yard when I'm kicked out the house...

Speaking of sleeping in the yard - it was roughly 6 months ago I took the next step to better health and gave up cocktails.  Completely empty calories, tamps down the immune system, studies show noooo bueno.   Then, 3 months ago started getting better sleep - 7 hours a night is the min.  Well... I'm still waiting to collect my windfall health dividend of more energy, better mood, whiter teeth, shinier coat...  Not only do I not feel better, I now have precious few excuses for how I DO feel.  Time was I could wake up on a Saturday and though I felt lousy remind myself that I was out ‘till 3am (the only time on the 24 hour clock when Taco Bell seems a good idea), got home, then chased that chimichanga with a Makers Mark.  Had a good time, then felt lousy - see, the world made sense.  Now?  Now I have neither rhyme nor reason when less than well.  No cause, no effect - all random.

The answer?  Reintroduce bad habits to scape-goat whatever ails me.  I'll thus be starting each weekday in flavor country with 2 strips of bacon and a Pall Mall.  Deeeee-licious.

"Gee ryan, you look like hell"

"Of course I do, I fired off this Tuesday with Jimmy Dean and Phillip Morris"

"Oh, well... then carry on."

So If you find yourself healthy as a horse (a comparison somewhat dependent on the horse), nothing will test your vigor faster than an evening with the J Ryan Trio.  You'll feel like a million bucks (all green and wrinkly).  An evening with good food, good friends and good music?  Priceless.

A Band for All Seasons

If variety is the spice of life, the J Ryan Trio is the Mrs Dash of music.  A bland three person trio?  no no no.. our hugely capable drums+bass+piano rhythm section is regularly augmented as our very own Kit-Kat cameos her youthful exuberance on vocals while the Lovely Laura weaves harmonies.  Layer-cake this with the imaginatively creative tones of the Mighty Bob on saxophone - a top shelf  player.  To this tonal horn-of-plenty, we now add truly killer gee-tar to the JRT barnyard.  For jazz?  yes.  For 70's and 80's? yes.  For Blues, Motown and Soul?  oh ya.  Accept nothing less than the full bodied, rich, thick and meaty sound of a 5 or 6 person 'trio' to keep the entertainment and fun needles pegged at 'max'.

In other news,  I was told just yesterday that "hey your website doesn't have any bookings listed, you guys must suck".  Unable to argue that logic, I went ahead and uploaded details on several up and coming events.  Do stop out for a great time in music, fun and friendship.  And don't hold back, feel free to let me know the specifics of what's good and what sucks.  I thrive on honest feedback - ha ha.

MMMM... What's up doc?

It's... high time this newsletter returns to its original intent: a cathartic outlet sharing with you the wacky doings and goings on of my day-to-day.  To wit:  the young band of roommates next door.  Good kids, nice guys, but keen to enjoy while sitting on their driveway, shall we say, cigarettes of a certain variety.   No big deal, but Indeed they smokestack herbs in sufficient quantities to affect the woodland creatures passing between our closely spaced row-houses.   I don't mind helping the squirrels stagger back to their appointed trees. But the rabbits, presumably suffering from the bunny munchies, are consuming my garden tomatoes and flowers at an increasingly ravenous rate.  The raccoons have requested more half eaten doritos bags be left in the trash bin...

Now I've always believed that 90% of problems can be hammered out if folks get together and chat face to face, and I'm happy to report that an air-quality detente has been reached.  My garden gnome looks less glassy eyed already.

Hey - music is no different - it works best when done face to face - live and in person where musicians, listeners, even hecklers can share some tunes, trade some laughs.  5G connectivity is great, and you should find us on facebook and check out our website at www.jryantrio.com,  but I'd encourage you to also stop out and recharge in person at any of the upcoming soirees listed below.  All are kid-friendly - most are dog friendly too!
